TRENDS FROM THE RUNWAY: Layering Separates

In Spring & Summer Trends by Jessica Faith Marshall

Fashion designers, such as myself, typically think of clothing as individual garments. We see clothing in the most minimalist way, compared to all other careers in the fashion industry, because we are responsible for the raw perspective of clothing. We have to create the base for stylists, editors, and creative directors to use the garments as the puzzle pieces to a photo shoot, runway show, or any other editorial creation.

This season, based on the new approach reflected in New York Fashion Week’s recent collections, the designers stretched themselves to alter their perspective to a layered, editorial aesthetic. There were many coats layered over the shoulder with layers of separates underneath, sheer was used in outerwear garments to give a light, spring appearance to a layered look, and panels of different colors and materials were used in formal wear to give the affect of layered garments. This can be a very glamorous trend; it gives richness to a slightly more minimalist look. On a daily basis, in my wardrobe and collections, I like to style bright minimalist dresses with a statement structured blazer over the shoulders, and a bold necklace for a versatile day-to-night look.

Rethink styling blazers under coats, buttoned down tops under blouses, and even silk rompers under sequin tops for a statement look.

 Vera Wang

Vera Wang – Layering Sheer

Although thicker materials are typically used when styling the layering trend, this season, consider innovative ways to layer sheer for summer-to-fall transitional weather. Similarly to the Vera Wang spring 2014 ensemble above, find sheer outwear pieces to layer over patchwork cocktail dresses for a sophisticated and sultry look.

RuffianRuffian – Layering the Monochromatic Suit

Layer matching or color blocked pieces to create a monochromatic suit, whether it’s printed or colored. Break up the cohesion throughout the look with a top and a necklace in a different color and material. This Ruffian look is a great example of a modern printed suit for women. The silk blouse breaks up the cacophony of prints, but creates a sophisticated structured silhouette.

Zang Toi – Layer Over the Shoulders

Regardless what the weather is, use outerwear to layer over a blazer and blouse. If you are thinking there will be too much bulk in the arms, layer it over the shoulders. Style a monochromatic bodice and pant together to create a personalized jumpsuit, and finish the look with a gorgeous coat over the shoulders, a structured oversized clutch, and a gold cuff.

Street Style – The Silk Blouse, Fitted Pant, and Cropped Outwear Ensemble

One of my favorite mix of proportions, is a long silk blouse or tunic, a cropped structured jacket, and fitted black pants. There is a very flattering silhouette with this look. Try different materials, prints, and statement jewelry to personalize these proportions.
