Top Ten Fall 2013 Coat Trends from the Runway

In Fall & Winter Trends by Jessica Faith Marshall

This season, editors, bloggers, and designers are purusing a new approach to the Fall Coat. Whether it is oversized, metallic, structured, or lace, fashion industry influencers are encouraging people to step out of their outerwear comfort zone and see coats as the new accessory. Think of wearing them over your shoulders with a blazer with rolled up sleeves, and a cocktail dress and heels for a runway look. Or try wearing a coat closed with a statement BCBGMAXAZRIA crystal belt and matching monochromatic heels.

While there are many ways to wear this trend all season, below are some photographs of my favorite ways to wear this intimidating trend, and wear it with ease and glamour. Scroll through to discover the top ten fall 2013 coat trends in the handpicked designer looks from the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2013 designer collections.

Diane von FurstenbergDiane von Furstenberg  – Printed Statement Coat

Typically the runway printed or treated statement coat is designed in a dramatic long length, and has a structured, masculine fit. This silhouette balances the ultra-feminine fabric with the length and fit. The ideal pieces to pair with this coat is a draped, silk blouse and a structured pencil skirt, similar to the Diane von Furstenberg look on the left.

MillyMilly – Go Bold

This fall, make a statement and opt for a dramatic lengthened coat in a bold color to add a statement to any look for day or nighttime. Experiment with different silhouettes, colors, prints, textures, and lengths to find a signature piece to wear throughout the season.

Monique Lhullier – Fresh Winter White

White is an essential color in anyone’s wardrobe; it’s a hue that works for every season and all weather. Most think of coats as being heavy and dark, but take a new approach by trying a white coat. It adds a very expensive effect to any look, it has a light and ethereal appearance, and it matches with everything in your wardrobe. White is the closet addition worth the investment.

ReemArcaReem Arca – Mixed Hue Fur

Fur can be a controversial topic, so depending on your preference-faux or real-oversized fur coats are the glamour essentials of the season. Fur is always a statement piece for day and nighttime looks, and has an overall glamorous, high-end appearance. My favorite runway pair is this Reem Arca black and red fur coat paired with a sophisticated black cocktail dress. It stands out from the mix of standard fur coats, and has an artistic appeal.
