In the dynamic world of fashion, opportunities for emerging talents to make a mark on the global stage are invaluable. The Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest (YDC), organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), stands as an inspiration for aspiring designers seeking to showcase their creativity and embark on a promising career. The YDC has been a vital platform since its inception in 1977, continually evolving with Hong Kong’s garment and fashion industries.
The YDC is currently inviting talented designers from around the world to participate in the competition, with a special emphasis on Hong Kong’s homegrown talents. The goal is to stimulate young designers to explore open-mindedly the realms of design aesthetics and style interpretation. Drawing inspiration from fashion capitals such as New York, Paris, London, and, of course, Hong Kong, the competition aims to bring forth the most creative and innovative design mavericks.
YDC Contest Criteria
Fashion design professionals or students aged between 18 and 45, with Hong Kong permanent residence identity, are eligible to participate in the competition. The top 10 finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their masterpieces on the catwalk at the Wan Chai Convention and Exhibition Centre on September 7, 2024. A panel of judges will announce four awards, including cash prizes, overseas internships, and a trip to any fashion capital of the winner’s choice.
Interested individuals can register online at YDC Registration. The registration deadline is April 29, 2024, 23:59 Hong Kong Time, and the deadline for submission of presentation boards is May 3, 2024, 17:00 Hong Kong Time.
The younger generation’s inclination today is to live in the present and express themselves authentically. The YDC encourages participants to embrace unconstrained ideas, showcase their unique styles, and demonstrate superb technological skills to both industry professionals and the public.
The YDC holds a significant place in the local fashion design industry, serving as a cradle for emerging designers to rise and shine. Over the years, the competition has nurtured numerous creative talents, with many leveraging the reputation and exposure gained through YDC to launch their own brands or operate successful mass production businesses.
2023 Young Designers Contest Champion
One shining example is Jason Ying, the 2023 YDC champion, who had the privilege of interning at designer Han Chong’s Self-Portrait studio in London. Jason’s desire to delve into the financial aspects of running a brand led him to explore Self-Portrait’s business strategy. Similarly, Johnson Chong, a winner of the excellence award, caught the attention of a celebrated local DJ who admired his creativity. This led to Johnson designing outfits for all DJ hosts at a music award ceremony, garnering significant praise. Other notable designers who have risen to prominence through YDC include ARTO (Arto Wong), DEMO (Derek Chan), REDEMPTIVE (Wilson Choi), Wilsonkaki (Wilson Yip), Charlotte Ng Studio (Charlotte Ng), YMDH (Jason Lee), gnastiy.com (Viki Tsang), and Kowloon City Boy (Toki Wong), among others.
The YDC’s significance extends beyond the competition itself. Launched in 1977, it has played a pivotal role in the development of Hong Kong’s garment and fashion industries. Open to Hong Kong permanent residents with training or experience in fashion design, the YDC is considered a rite of passage for local designers aspiring to challenge themselves and gain exposure on the global stage.
FASHIONALLY.com, an online platform run by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, plays a crucial role in promoting the city’s young fashion designers to a global audience. Since its launch in 2012, FASHIONALLY.com has been organizing “FASHIONALLY COLLECTION” shows and presentations at HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week, CENTRESTAGE, and other events. These platforms provide local designers with opportunities to launch their latest works and gain visibility.
The YDC presents a golden opportunity for emerging fashion designers to make their mark on the global stage. If you are a fashion design professional or student with a passion for creativity and innovation, don’t miss the chance to participate in the YDC and showcase your talent to the world.
