New York Fashion Week has had its fair share of venues over the years. My very first season covering for Fashion Mingle was NYFW’s last for the extravagant Lincoln Center. The reason for explaining this is that something new this Spring Summer 2018 season was the addition to the Dream: First Stage location. Nestled in on 17th street between 8th and 9th ave. Was a silver building covered in round almost extraterrestrial looking windows. It was the First Stage at Dream that I would be planting myself in the press pit once more to cover the Indian born creative powerhouse Runa Ray as she debut her s/s 2018 collection.
Known for her ability to combine her knowledge and experience in Haute Couture with her coveted ready to wear, Runa Ray had quite the impact and variety this season. This season’s collection was all about keeping things as natural as possible. Starting out with a collection of white dresses, Runa’s spring/summer 2018 collection had all the makings of a beautiful one. With a relatively neutral color palette, Made up mostly of whites, beige, with a few blues, and greens.

It was in the detail that brought each piece to life. With the theme of creating a collection from nature, Each colored piece was dyed using only the most natural elements to produce that color. From mens sweaters and jackets to women’s tops, and skirts. Something that was truly unique about this collection was the detailed floral and leafy patterns. What is most incredible about this is the fact that every piece you see these patterns on, where actually made with real leaves and flowers. Having almost fossilized the elements into each garment and its fabrics itself. A process i have never even heard of before but am immensely captivated by. Runa Ray’s spring 2018 collection is that of pure imagination, and with that being said it was the finale that hit closest to home.
Walking down the runway in a fitted white gown pressed with red roses and vines immortalized in the dress itself. As the model stopped at the end of the runway she pulled the sides of the dress apart to reveal the beautiful saying i relate so closely to. “Imagination is the only weapon Against Reality.” A true staple to her innovating collection.
Runa Ray continues to excel each season. The indian born designer has made a name for herself and has come a long way since her days with John Galliano and the House of Dior. Not only known for her achievements and background, Runa Has developed a truly unique and memorable style of her own. Personally as a lover of couture, i am always excited to cover her shows and see how she mixes the the elements together with each new collections. Now i have no doubt that she will absolutely do this, However the artistic expression behind her Spring Summer 2018 collection at New York Fashion Week will be an exciting one to top.
