Fashion designer Robert Rodriguez recently launched KOLTSON, a luxury eveningwear collection designed to create a common thread between art and fashion. The brand had its debut during New York Fashion Week, on February 14th, 2023, where the Fall/Winter 2023 collection was showcased. Rodriguez partnered with abstract expressionist Vicky Barranguet for the inaugural collection to create a series of seven canvas paintings titled “THREADS” that inspired the collection’s prints, foiling, silhouettes, and embroideries.
The sustainable collection features certified and natural fabrics such as FSC-certified viscose, Italian cotton, voile and woven at a family-owned mill that meets the highest European standards with nontoxic dyes and responsible manufacturing. Silk textiles were also chosen for their natural and biodegradable properties. In addition, Rodriguez decided to produce locally in New York City to support the garment district, local suppliers, sewers, and artisans.
Pepe Muñoz, a fashion illustrator, also collaborated with Rodriguez to add his flair and interpretation to the collection. The Fall/Winter 2023 collection includes 32 looks, with reinterpretations of the iconic caftan. Key styles include a double-layer sheer silk georgette caftan gown with embroidered feathers, a black cotton poplin bustier top with gold foiling, and a crepe mini dress with an ostrich feather neckline.
Born in Havana, Cuba, Rodriguez began his career at Christian Dior as an assistant designer to Creative Director Geri Gerard. He launched his eponymous contemporary Ready-To-Wear collection in 2003, quickly capturing attention among industry icons, media, and high-end retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
With KOLTSON, Rodriguez is returning to the fashion industry with a meaningful project that supports artists and artisans through collaborations and partnerships. By focusing on sustainability and local production, KOLTSON hopes to play a small part in revitalizing manufacturing in the USA, specifically in New York. KOLTSON’s debut pieces are not to be missed as they combines art and fashion in a luxurious eveningwear collection.
