Studio 189, the visionary fashion brand co-founded by actress Rosario Dawson and luxury executive Abrima Erwiah, presented its Spring/Summer 2024 collection under the theme “Evolution: A Decade of Style & Sustainability” during New York Fashion Week. As the brand celebrates its journey, this collection is a testament to ten years of purpose, power, and unwavering commitment.

From its humble beginnings as an intimate capsule launch in 2013, Studio 189 has transformed into a full-fledged apparel and accessories brand. “Evolution” pays tribute to this remarkable progress by blending motifs from the past with a forward-looking vision.

The silhouettes presented in this collection celebrate the shedding of layers. Studio 189 introduces skin-baring options ranging from racerback tanks to modern, boxy, cropped jackets and shirts. These garments are crafted with attention to detail, featuring hand-batik, artisanal weaving, and ancient indigo dyeing techniques.

Accessories in the collection exhibit functionality and a tribute to craftsmanship across the diaspora. Traditional tribal beads from Nigeria and Ghana infuse these pieces with cultural heritage.

The color palette anchors itself in natural earth tones, punctuated with vivid reds, yellows, and greens. This choice mirrors the energy of a new season, decade, and generation, representing Studio 189’s forward-looking spirit.

The runway show’s set design mirrors the blend of past and present, incorporating artisans who have played pivotal roles in shaping the designer brand’s journey. And the uniqueness of this collection reflects the distinctiveness of Studio 189’s evolution.

At the heart of these pieces lies the striking “Crossroads Print,” a recurring diamond motif symbolizing safe spaces in the fight against domestic violence. The beloved “Zebra Print” is returning from previous collections, now refreshed with vibrant shades like electric pink, orange, and mint green.

Studio 189 is an artisan-produced fashion lifestyle brand and social enterprise recently recognized through the CFDA Lexus Fashion Initiative for Sustainability. Operating in Africa, the brand produces African and African-inspired content and clothing. Studio 189 supports various community-led projects in Africa and the United States. It collaborates with artisanal communities specializing in traditional craftsmanship techniques, such as natural plant-based dye Indigo, hand-batik, Kente weaving, and more.

This season represents a significant milestone that embodies the brand’s original mission. Co-founder Abrima Erwiah reflects on their journey: “We said fashion can be a social change. I can see the impact of what we have done.” Studio 189’s legacy as a pioneer in the style and sustainability arena, its vibrant creative community, and its extensive historical connections are all testaments to this impact.

As Studio 189 commemorates its past, it invites you to contemplate the future and the culmination of a decade in style and sustainability from past to present.

The Spring/Summer 2024 collection will be available on studiooneeightynine.com, at Studio One Eighty Nine retail stores, and select retail locations starting in October 2023.
