How To Get An Online Internship Today

In Student Mingle by Laurel Webb

Though COVID-19 still has most stuck in our homes, that doesn’t mean you can’t still advance your career with some wifi and your laptop! Internships are essential in learning about your prospective industry and gaining needed experience to land the job you want in the future. And, they can help you build connections while deciding what you like and dislike in a position. The pandemic has brought about many new online opportunities, including the ability to do internships without relocating! Turn on your laptop, save that rent money, and read on to learn how to land your next online internship.

    1. Update your LinkedIn. While it is not a guarantee that keeping your profile up to date will attract recruiters that have the perfect position for you, but there’s a chance! Many recruiters search LinkedIn for potential candidates by keywords and skills, so fill out your profile as much as you can, and include all relevant and necessary information like schooling, jobs you’ve held, and your resume. There’s even a section that you can let recruiters know you are open to new positions! And, you never know if one of your existing connections could help plug you into a position somewhere.
    2. Update your resume. We’ve listed some Resume Tips and Tricks to help you out with this. A poor resume that recruiters can’t read, doesn’t highlight your skill, or is irrelevant to the position will lead to hardly any offers.
    3. Update your skills. There are many offerings on the internet to help you stay relevant in industry skills, including YouTube tutorials and Hubspot certifications. Stand out from other candidates by having multiple relevant certifications and skills under your belt!
    4. Bookmark job listing websites. Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn are all great websites with a variety of promising jobs and opportunities. But for internships, the by far best website I’ve found is Chegg Internships. Yes, the study website. And don’t worry, it’s free. They have amazing search features including keywords, date listed, location, whether the position is paid, and the key to online opportunities- where it’s remote. Find internships, apply, follow up, and check back on Chegg for new opportunities at least weekly. You never know what will pop up, and there are hundreds of new listings daily.
    5. Follow up. Like I said, following up with the positions you applied to or were interviewed for is very important in displaying your interest and dedication. Recruiters can get hundreds of applications, so even if you don’t have their email, find them on LinkedIn and send them a quick message displaying your interest!

Do all 5 things listed above, and you will improve your chances to land a great online internship experience. Who knows, you may land multiple! For more tips like these, sign up for a Student Mingle profile now!
