Fashion Photographer Maryna Marston Focuses Her Passion At New York Fashion Week

In Behind-the-Scenes, Photography & Video by Gerilyn Hayes

Maryna Marston first photographed the runways with Fashion Mingle at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in September 2013. She assisted the team in capturing the designer collections, backstage interviews and runway footage to be featured on the site. She recalls being extremely nervous and excited all at the same time before shooting her first show. “It was amazing to be at the roots of fashion trends and where fashion is going right now. I learned that being in a press pit is not easy, because you get 300 or more people in a very tiny space trying to get the best shot possible”.

Marston is an international visionary whose fashion photography is borne of inspired travels and pure passion. “I have always been interested in photography, but it was more of a hobby,” Marston said, reflecting on her decision to become a fashion photographer. “My mom had a dark room and I enjoyed watching her make her own prints. It was not until I moved to London and discovered amazing photographers like David LaChapelle, Mario Testino or Richard Avadon. I remember being amazed by their creativity, and that really inspired me to think beyond what I know or simply see.”

Immersed in the idea of fashion photography, Marston decided to enroll in photography programs at Austin Community College and has excelled since completing them. “I have a degree in economics, so for me it was not until I moved to America that I decided to really pursue this passion of mine.”

Prior to working with Fashion Mingle, her works were published in Italian Vogue and CNBC. She is also a businesswoman who conceptualizes fashion designers’ look-books, directs editorial and magazine photo shoots, and executes runway photography in America and abroad. “One of the models I worked with made it to top 3 on America’s Next top model,” says Marston about crafting professional modeling portfolios.

Although the fashion industry is known for competitiveness, Marston takes it all in stride. While attending Mercedes Benz Fashion Week for Fashion Mingle she learned a timeless trick of the trade. “…the past season I had only the best experiences,” she recounted, “Most of the sort of ‘veterans of the press pit’ have been doing this for decades and even know each others’ pets’ names. They are very calm, collected and kind. They have done it a million times before and everything that could have gone wrong has already happened to them a few times.”

Focused on the big picture, Marston envisions her fashion photography published and featured in American Vogue. She would also like have exhibitions all over the world that benefit philanthropic causes throughout the world.
