Drawing from her seasoned expertise and insights in a candid interview with the designer, we present a curated list of 5 tips for fashion designers.

5 Essential Tips for Fashion Designers

  1. Build a Reliable Team: Having a committed and supportive team is crucial for navigating the complexities of the fashion industry. An emerging designer should focus on assembling a team that shares their vision and is dedicated to the brand’s success. This team should encompass various roles, from design and production to marketing and logistics, ensuring all aspects of the business are well-managed and supported.
  2. Establish Credibility: Overcoming the hurdle of being taken seriously by industry platforms and stakeholders is essential for growth. To establish credibility, emerging designers should focus on consistently delivering high-quality designs and collections. Building a strong portfolio, cultivating relationships with industry professionals, and participating in reputable fashion events can help validate the brand’s legitimacy and attract valuable opportunities.
  3. Seek Strategic Partnerships and Sponsorships: Funding and scaling operations are significant challenges for emerging designers. Partnering with established brands or securing sponsorships can provide financial support and access to resources that facilitate growth. Identifying potential partners whose values align with the brand’s ethos and leveraging these relationships can contribute to long-term success.
  4. Embrace Networking and Collaboration: The fashion industry thrives on connections and collaboration. Participating in networking events, joining industry platforms like Fashion Mingle, and seeking mentorship opportunities are vital for expanding one’s network and accessing valuable insights. By fostering relationships with fellow designers, industry professionals, and mentors, emerging designers can gain support, knowledge, and opportunities for collaboration and growth.
  5. Stay Resilient and Adapt: Navigating the fashion industry requires resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. From sourcing materials to managing production timelines, unexpected obstacles are inevitable. Emerging designers should cultivate resilience, maintain a positive mindset, and be prepared to adapt their strategies as needed. By embracing setbacks as learning opportunities and remaining flexible in their approach, designers can overcome obstacles and continue to progress towards their goals.

Starting her career following her father’s footsteps as an accountant, Scott soon realized her true calling lay elsewhere. When asked about her beginnings, she reminisced, “I followed in my father’s footsteps and acquired my accounting degree, but fashion is what I’m truly passionate about.” This revelation led her to a significant turning point when someone asked her, “What would you do for free?” Her immediate thought was shopping. This simple yet profound question spurred her to take a chance on a career in fashion, beginning as a personal shopper.

Scott’s journey progressed organically from personal shopping to styling and reselling accessories. Despite these roles, she felt something was missing until she ventured into designing in 2015. The process of creating a collection, from conceptualizing designs to selecting fabrics and colors, provided a profound sense of fulfillment. “It wasn’t until 2015 that I started designing, and that was it for me,” Scott shared, highlighting how the creative process and seeing her visions come to life were incredibly rewarding. The feedback from her audience and customers, who resonated with her designs, added to her sense of accomplishment.

The path to establishing the Dell Scott Collection was fraught with challenges. Scott’s initial struggle was building a reliable team. Balancing multiple roles, from dressing models to being the primary point of contact, was physically and mentally exhausting. Establishing credibility was another significant obstacle. Getting taken seriously by high-level platforms and convincing them of the quality of her collections was tough initially. “You want to see that growth. You want to be taken seriously while having good consistent help, and in the beginning, that was the toughest,” Scott noted.

As her brand grew, so did the challenges. Fabric sourcing, production timelines, and funding became critical concerns. Scott described the complexities of working with overseas manufacturers and the hurdles in scaling her operations. Despite these challenges, Scott’s determination and the support of partnerships and sponsorships have been instrumental in her brand’s evolution.

Scott emphasized the importance of support systems within the fashion industry, particularly for emerging designers. She acknowledged the role of platforms like Fashion Mingle in providing networking opportunities and connecting designers with essential resources. “Fashion Mingle gets kudos because people can join them and see entrepreneurs and network with others in the industry,” Scott said, stressing the value of mentorship and sharing knowledge.

The fashion industry can be insular, with many professionals hesitant to share their knowledge and resources. Scott advocates for a more inclusive and collaborative environment, urging for more supportive networks and mentoring opportunities. She highlighted the significance of networking organizations and the need for sessions where emerging designers can gain valuable insights and connections.

Through Dell Scott’s candid reflections on her challenges and triumphs, she sheds light on the realities of building a fashion brand and the importance of support networks. Designers and fashion professionals must recognize the significance of collaboration and mentorship in navigating the competitive fashion landscape.
