It’s not often you find someone who catapults to success in the fashion industry, but Urbana Chappa is one such girl and she was pretty surprised to find herself at New York Fashion Week only 6 months after designing her first collection.
Urbana’s journey into fashion design started at an unlikely place in her life, suffering from postpartum depression. Her collection reflects her journey from sadness into feeling like a sexy, confidant woman again. Her collection begins with striking black and white ensembles and ends with a powerful statement, the introduction of colorful burqas that symbolize the veiling of her insecurities while still allowing her to tell a story through her eyes.
Urbana knew that when she dressed up in silky and flowing dresses, she felt her best. And that is the collection she has designed. She wants women of every shape and size to feel sexy in the dresses she has crafted from her favorite silks, satins, and laces she has used in her collection.
A small-town girl from Beeville, TX, Urbana traveled to Los Angeles 8 years ago to make her mark. She found success in the music industry, but left her career to start a family and after a few years of motherhood, was feeling the need for a fresh start. Her first introduction into the professional world of fashion was when she was asked by award-winning songwriter and friend, Diane Warren, to style her for the February 2012 Grammy Awards, for which she had been nominated. She quickly made a name for herself among a small circle of celebrity friends and within 1 year she had designed her own collection and was invited to show at New York Fashion Week.

Urbana’s Inspiration for the Maison de Urbana Collection
Urbana’s collection, Maison de Urbana, is a pure statement of female empowerment. While the word “burqa” may immediately bring to mind the oppressive head-to-toe black garments worn by women in scary news stories about Afghanistan, in Urbana’s world, her Persian, Black and Spanish background is woven intricately through the flowing gowns, colorful fabrics and versatile scarves and hoods featured in her collection. What I found infinitely appealing was the way she could turn a modern interpretation of the burqa into an outfit any girl would love to wear.
