Cho Cho Cheng, the designer behind the brand CHOCHENG, brought another “women in film” inspired show to the runways of New York Fashion Week to show his FW’20 collection which recreates the iconic style of Shirley Maclaine in the film The Apartment. This fashion show took place at Spring Studios on Friday, February 7th 2020 at 12pm.
The Vibrant Collection
As I made my way backstage I was thrilled to see some vibrant colors hanging from the clothing racks. The models were being styled in classy fresh makeup looks while hair was styled in clean braids and pulled back into buns. The hot pink, purple and green color palette offers a shout out to the 1970’s and 80’s disco era, while Shirley Maclaine’s press photo wearing a tuxedo also inspired pieces in this collection, offering male/female interplay in the designs, telling the story of “femininity and authority at once”, according to the designer. This interplay is evident in many of CHOCHENG’s shows. Trompe l’oeil jackets dominated the runways along with the signature cotton boucle jacket and cotton crepe shirts. Playful sophistication with traditional British tailoring makes up this 30 piece collection.
CHOCHENG is an environmentally conscious brand and all manufacturing is cruelty-free. As a lover of the natural world, Cho Cho Cheng makes sure that “all fabrics are natural and carefully sourced from heritage suppliers in the UK”. His fabric choices also support traditional craftsman methods. CHOCHENG has teamed up with natural, organic and cruelty-free makeup brand Inika and make up artist Campbell Ritchie for this show and other various projects. Hair styling was provided by Matthew Curtis for Unite Haircare.
