Trends from the Runway: Red Carpet Statements that Challenge Traditional Gowns

In Spring & Summer Trends by Jessica Faith Marshall

The award season is upon us and many of you may have already planned to host or attend celebrations for these glamorous award galas. But while most of us are hanging our holiday party outfits in the back of our closets, celebrities are heading to appointments with top stylists and designer studios for custom gown fittings.

FashionMingle.net is fortunate to have a front row seat to every season’s most glamorous trends when we cover Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, so let’s rewind to last season’s collections to see the trends you should incorporate the next time you need a Red Carpet look.

The Sleek Jumpsuit

This silhouette may be associated with the wide-legged 70’s trend, and many stylists would never style their glamorous clients in this garment when there are always gorgeous gowns to choose from. However, the jumpsuit has been revolutionized by many designers in their recent collections on the runways. From embellished jumpsuits with structured bodices to color-blocked tuxedo jumpsuits in silk, this garment not only makes a statement on the Red Carpet, it will make you stand out amongst the sea of gowns while not breaking the dress code.

The Formal Pant Suit

Vera Wang‘s Spring/Summer 2014 collection is an inspiration to all of the celebrities accustomed to traditional long evening gowns for red carpet events. She is an evening designer, but she presented many gorgeous pant looks appropriate for the evening time in her latest New York Fashion Week collection. If you are new to the pants-for-evening trend, test the waters by forgetting the formal suit jacket and replacing it with a high-low style tunic in a gorgeous silk print. For the bottoms, opt for a draped silhouette in a silk or crepe.

Cut-Out Evening Gowns

Cut-outs have been a popular trend for several seasons, and designers are bringing it to the Red Carpet, runways, and galas in gowns in a big way. This subtly seductive trend is a sleek way to make your evening attire stand out from your daytime wardrobe. Many structured bodices, open backs, high slits, and asymmetrical cuts in evening wear have been consistently seen on the runway and are popular on the Red Carpets.

Dramatic Prints

Prints are traditionally known to enhance daytime clothing. Many of the New York Fashion Week spring/summer 2014 collections have revolutionized vibrant prints-from beach-inspired to abstract-as the new evening wear textile. Quite a few of the designers fell in love with this concept by fitting their evening gowns in a loose, freer  silhouette, rather than the generic corseted evening gowns.
