Going to see the world for the first time?

Setting off on your very first backpacking adventure can feel both exciting and overwhelming. With so many things to think about, including sorting out your accommodation, transfers, and insurance, packing might come down to a last-minute rush!

But getting organized and sorting out an efficient packing system will pay dividends when you finally hit the road. Whether you’re road-tripping from state to state or jetting across the world, it’s worth mastering the art of packing. We’ve explained how to do it perfectly here.

  • Choose the right backpack

First and foremost, you need to choose the right sized backpack. As your most important piece of gear, your backpack will store your essentials and become your portable closet while you’re away from home.

Shop around for a durable backpack that’s appropriately sized for you – and for the length of your trip. It needs to be comfortable, so make sure you’ve tried it on in the store before you commit to buying it. Spending more also means you’ll get better quality, which is essential for bigger adventures.

  • Pack light and smart

Depending on the type of vacation you have planned, you’ll need different types of clothing and equipment. Remember, you’ll be carrying everything on your back while on the move – so try to focus on those lightweight supplies!

If you’re just planning to relax by the pool or on the beach in every destination you visit, a backpack filled with swimwear and light coverups will be ideal.

But if you’re more inclined towards adventure and thrill-seeking, you might need extra room for your gear. If you’ve booked biking tours in Europe, the logistics and transfers with your luggage will be taken care of.

  • Take all the essentials

There’s nothing worse than finding out you’ve forgotten something important for your daily routine. Replacing even simple toiletries can be expensive in other countries, so it’s worth packing your bag with those staple items. Our basic checklist includes:

  • One pair of comfortable walking shoes
  • One pair of flip-flops or sandals
  • Basic toiletries, in travel-sized bottles
  • First-aid kit
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Flashlight or headlamp
  • Travel documents and copies
  • Portable charger and cables

As for your clothes, you’ll need to think about the climate. If you’re going somewhere with changeable weather conditions, light and moisture-wicking layers will be invaluable. Focus on keeping your bag light – and staying comfortable on active days out.

Taking caution on the road

Finally, it’s so important to keep safe while you’re travelling.

Your backpack plays a bigger role in your personal safety than you might expect, especially when it comes to anything that’s visible from the outside. If you’re taking jewelry or watches, make use of pouches or boxes and store them in internal compartments. And for extra peace of mind, buying zip padlocks means you can snooze on the train, bus, or connecting flight.
