The 5 Best Fashion Programs in Texas

When looking for a career in fashion, many people head to New York City or Los Angeles for education and opportunities. But did you know, an abundance of excellent fashion programs are located in Texas? If you are thinking about studying fashion, look no further than the fashion programs in Texas. The state with 5 of the 15 most populous cities in America. Below you’ll find programs that have national rankings, prestigious faculty, and unique opportunities perfect for students looking to make a career in fashion.

Baylor University

Baylor, located in the now popular Waco, Texas due to Chip and Joanna Gaines, offers two nationally ranked apparel majors to choose from. Baylor is also less than 2 hours away from the quickly growing fashion hub of Dallas, Texas. 

The two majors, Apparel Merchandising and Apparel Design & Product Development allow students the opportunity to work in a variety of careers, including as a fashion designer, corporate buyer, visual merchandiser, and digital retailer. Apparel Merchandising is offered as a minor, as well.

University of Texas

The University of Texas, one of the most famous public universities in the United States, has a renowned fashion program called Textiles & Apparels. The major features a program called UT in NYC, which boasts Iris Apfel as visiting professor, and allows students industry tours including past visits with Donna Karen and Tommy Hilfiger.

The program also features a fashion show for senior fashion students at one of Austin’s biggest event centers, the Frank Erwin Center, that generally gathers over 5,000 attendees and is broadcasted on the Longhorn Network.

University of North Texas

The University located in Denton, Texas, holds two fashion majors: Fashion Design and Merchandising, along with a master’s program: M.F.A. in Design. Additionally, the school houses the Texas Fashion Collection, a warehouse made up of 20,000 pieces of luxury, vintage apparel including pieces from brands and designers Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta, Dior, and Balenciaga.

UNT is only 40 minutes from downtown Dallas, where students have been able to find internships and careers in companies such as Rolex, Neiman Marcus, and J.C. Penney.

Texas Tech University

This Lubbock, Texas school also offers two fashion majors- Apparel Design & Manufacturing and Retail Management. For students looking more at the business side of fashion, the retail management major will give future entrepreneurs and business individuals great preparation for making a substantial living in the fashion industry. 

The school also offers two master’s program options, including one in Environmental Apparel Design, a current popular movement in the fashion industry.

Monisha J., a 2020 Apparel Design & Manufacturing graduate, had an excellent experience in the program. “What I liked most about the program is that it was very hands-on. We weren’t just told what to do, we were always given the opportunity to experiment and do the assignments with our own personal touches! “

Texas State University

Texas State’s College of Family and Consumer Sciences holds its Fashion Merchandising program, which is accompanied by a required business administration minor to “enhance their preparation for the fashion industry.” The students in the program also obtain internships before they graduate, including some at big-name designer Christian Siriano.
