East Asian history knows something extremely well; style. This is exactly what the Hong Kong Trade Development Council brought to the runway with Fashion Hong Kong; an initiative of fashion shows that have been taking place internationally to highlight Hong Kong designers and brands to the world. The three seasoned participating brands during this New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2018 season were Avenglosa, Harrison Wong, and Heaven Please+.
Harrison Wong
If we look at China before it become the metropolis of manufacturing, Fashion Hong Kong, they are no strangers to good tailoring. The show kicked off with a combative start by Harrison Wong. Staying true to his tailored nature of casual elegance; the inventive cuts and dash of bright colors made the clothes come alive. A sleek collection with adrenaline.
Avenglosa
The second in the line-up was Avenglosa—known for working with the finest of leather and not new to the New York Fashion Week scene. They first showed in 2013. The collection couldn’t but help bring the mind to Hong Kong films and the time of strong Western culture infusion. The structured leather skits, suit-like jackets, and berets calls to women of today; from work to play, or more work.
Heaven Please+
The showcase closed with Heaven Please+ and their first to show during New York Fashion Week. The 2011 based brand brought in a sense of wearable playfulness and imaginative design details. These pieces would befit the New York streets, and may we add bring some color to the black dominating wardrobes. A question to ask is: can these pieces work out side New York in more conservative cities?
The hairstyle, cheeks blushed, and inner tinted lips are also not to be dismissed in the collections styling; the eye sees ancient Asia. Honk Kong has had it share of history with Britain, and it hasn’t been long since they joined China again. The message is clear: Fashion Hong Kong is taking what we know into a new era of modernization and continuing the long historical tradition on the importance of style, but now, globally.
