The John Paul Ataker Spring 2018 Collection Takes a Stand for Slow Fashion

In Fashion Week, Spring & Summer Trends by Patrick Hovan

In our fast-paced world, and in a city that is arguably paced even faster, the expectation that everything should be instant is high. The leaders of the fashion industry as well as its consumers thrive on instant gratification. However, this is not the approach taken by the brilliant fashion designer, John Paul Ataker at his New York Fashion Week Spring / Summer 2018  runway show.

The NYFW collection of John Paul Ataker celebrated “slow fashion” and a commitment to environmentally responsible production. He offered a very strong statement on his “run of show” handed out at the fashion show. In his words “The world’s economy is in a difficult situation due to fast and cheap consumption. I have always been on the side of slow fashion. It stands for choosing what is best for both nature and human health.”

Ataker’s collection drew inspiration from the vibrant culture and folklore of the black sea zone of Turkey. The collection was inspired by the jackets, baggy pants, loincloths, and waist coats of the region. The color palette consisted of white, black, and ivory and each garment was hand made of organza, cotton and linen with jackets featuring hand sewn needle work.

The models chosen by John Paul Ataker were natural, with very little makeup and hair was simply styled. Two supermodels, Victoria Secret Angel’s Taylor Hill and Karlie Kloss walked the show who closed the show with an intricate organza ruffled dress accented with a metallic band vest complete with long flowing train.

This season John Paul Ataker chose to use his NYFW platform to make a statement on the current state of our planet and encourage the audience to become more aware of how fast fashion impacts our world. In closing, I also learned that this collection came with a warning. A reminder of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear environmental disaster and its many victims. The show closed with a song from Kazim Koyuncu, A favorite musician from the Black Sea region. In the end John Paul Ataker not only debuted a beautiful collection, but also an extremely important message to humanity.
