I was thrilled beyond belief to be sitting in the press pit in Gallery II, awaiting one of my favorite designers, Prabal Gurung, to unveil his new 2018 Spring / Summer collection. The NYFW venue at Skylight Clarkson Square was packed full of people from the press risers to front row full of powerful women including activist Deray McKesson, poet Cleo Wade, politico Huma Abedin, editor-in-chief to Teen VOGUE Elaine Welteroth and the most surprising of all, feminist Gloria Steinem, who admits this was her first New York Fashion Week event ever! Steinem couldn’t have picked a more incredible collection for her virgin New York Fashion Week experience.

Prabal Gurung presented 44 looks worn by the hottest A-List models including Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid and Victoria’s Secret model Taylor Hill. “The inspiration for the spring collection begins with a dream. Yet we are wide awake. We are dreamers bringing a collection of memories to life with our eyes and minds open” says Gurung. Some pieces portray colorful memories from childhood, growing up in Nepal, with visions deeply rooted in prayer flags gently blowing in the breeze while their spiritual meaning soars to the heavens. Other looks were drawn from surreal memories of recent travels to the Tasaki Pearl Farm in Nagasaki, Japan, portraying the ama pearl diving mermaids who display qualities of strength and determination.

The textiles and vibrant colors in this collection were a treasure trove of their own, hand crafted with silk, chiffon, cotton, linen, pearls and diamonds and made into a magnificent collection of corsets, dresses, jackets, body suits, blouses and trousers in the summery hues of coral sapphires, citron and azul along with bright red, white and black. Floral prints filled my camera lens as I was swept away on this magical journey.

The amazing team of people responsible for this brilliant show include: production byVilla Eugene, KCD Worldwide for front of house, stylist Alex White, casting by Maida Boina, make-up by Diane Kendal provided by MAC Cosmetics, hair stylist Anthony Turner for Wella Professionals and hair tools provided by Hot Tools, nails by Mei Kawajri for Red Carpet Manicure with nail prep by Voesh, skincare by Belif and music by Sabestien Perrin.

Prabal Gurung’s New York Fashion Week collection’s ultimate meaning was one of unity. “It is a bright, colourful and sometimes contradictory world that we hope to one day live in. It is a world that is free of bias, free of hate, free of prejudice. Simply put, it is a world where humanity reigns. We cannot dream of anything more beautiful”.

I think we can all agree.
