FEATURING: Creatures of the Wind, Marissa Webb, Tadashi Shoji, Tome, & Wes Gordon
Thursday, September 10th, marked the first day of New York Fashion Week – Spring 2016 Collections. However, this date represented more than just the first day of Fashion Week. Fashion Week as we knew it, forever changed post the February shows and all eyes were on IMG, and their plans for bringing back structure and prestige to the shows. The first significant change was the venue. Lincoln Center had kicked out MBFW due to damange and other contract violations. The second major change, was the title sponsor, Mercedes-Benz, dropping out, forcing the name to be simply New York Fashion Week, instead of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The CFDA begin working with IMG to restore order.; streamlining schedules, combining programs, etc under the NYFW name and umbrella. Even independent fashion weeks, such as MADE fashion week, which normally showcased their designers at MILK studios separately from MBFW, was acquired by IMG.
Even with all the changes, New York Fashion Week still managed to start relatively on time and at new venues. The venues are smaller, and there’s been a significant decline in invitations, and the amount of press at each show. But, even with all of these changes, true fashion aficionados are still enthralled with New York Fashion Week, and doing whatever they can to see the new collections from some of their favorite designers. Our team, as usual is in New York covering the shows, and they’ll be posting about their experiences here on FashionMingle.net over the next several days, so stay tuned!
TRENDS
A big trend that several designers used in their collections was the pairing of long dresses with pants. And in this instance, pants meaning actual pants and not leggings. The pants resembled baggy trousers. The pairing of dresses with pants and jeans was starting to become popular in street fashion at the end of this Summer and it looks like it will be huge for Spring/Summer 2016. Several designers showed this look from Creatures of the Wind to Tome.
COLORS
Pastels have been a favorite for Spring (and lately, Fall) for a few seasons now, and they returned as popular choice for the designers on day one of NYFW. However, designers did mix it up by throwing in bold and vibrant color looks. Marissa Webb threw in bold shades of yellow and red against her pastel pinks, and safari greens. Wes Gordon and Tome also featured yellow looks, and Tadashi Shoji featured a striking shade of blue with a hint of purple.
DRESS KING
Tadashi Shoji reigned supreme with his dresses and gowns. From shift dress to full-length ball gowns, Tadashi crossed the spectrum.
TEXTILES
Leather, which has been deemed worthy for the hotter months of Spring and Summer for years now, was also a popular choice for some of the designers. Both Marissa Webb and Wes Gordon featured leather 3rd pieces over their looks.
