Located in the extravagant Gotham Hall, the lighting was dim and the crowd waited in anticipation. As I stood tucked away with a wall of fellow photographers and videographers the music grew from an upbeat dance vibe to a soft trance as the mood was set for the show to begin. A serge of color and emotion swept over the crowd as the the first model stomped down the runway and Malan Breton’s Spring / Summer collection made its 2016 debut.
The experience was almost hypnotic as model after model walked the runway in a flowing wardrobe of elaborate color. Each design was noticeably intricate as well as its presentation. Props such as over-sized parasol umbrellas helped move the story of the men’s designs. Breton’s collection was deeply inspired by the Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan and he allowed that to show in an extravagant way. The collection was called “Reflections” and the name could not have suited the entire show any better. Not only was the concept clear in the designs and presentation, but also with in the emotion the show itself provoked. In my opinion a true work of art is able to do just that.
As the show went on, the music faded into a softer Asian-inspired sound that created an emotional trance and kept you zoned in on the runway anticipating what comes next. It was clear that Breton’s passion for design as well as his roots in Taiwan were fully present. Known for his intricate designs and fabric work, each piece stood out as its own statement as well as a beautifully crafted collection. As the show wrapped I walked out to the front of the hall and left filled with adrenaline. This was the first runway show I attended for the season and it was an amazing one to help kick off my New York Fashion Week experience. I left excited to return to my hotel to view the images I just captured of the extraordinary “Reflections” Spring / Summer 2016 Malan Breton Collection.
